A symphony in blue and yellow

In november 2023 I worked as artist in residence in Zundert, made possible by the Van Gogh house. For this residency I lived for a month in the birth place of Vincent van Gogh.

Instead of looking at the world in detail, with this project I wanted to focus on sound. I wanted to emphasise on the thing that was already there. In my research I discovered that Van Gogh tried to evoke sound with his colour use in his paintings. In his letters to his brother Theo he often talked about these experiences. The town here still holds the same sounds as that it did in Van Goghs time.  The beech tree next to the gallery has changed over all those years but the sound of the wind through the leaves still sounds the same. Just as the crows on the cemetery and the church clocks.

I made horns out of metal that strengthen the direct sounds out the environment. Where under the pear tree and in the field you can listen to the sounds that connect us through time.

In the gallery I showed my work process. On the walls you could follow my research and see the sound recordings made with a selfmade phonograph. Where sound becomes visual.
