A symphony in blue and yellow

As the winner of the Van Gogh AiR award 2023, I spent a month as an artist in residence at the guest studio of the Vincent van Gogh house in his birthplace, Zundert. During my research, I discovered that Van Gogh aimed to evoke sounds through color in his paintings. Inspired by this, I sought to capture the sounds of the village. Sound is a dimension of our every day life that we often don't pay attention too. I welded metal horns to acoustically capture and amplify the sounds of my surroundings. The horns that I placed at different heights allowed visitors to experience both the present and the past. Using a self-made phonograph, I also made sounds visible through engravings, creating an archive of noises that Van Gogh might have heard himself, which led me to locations such as the carillon in the town hall.

In the gallery I showed my work process and presented a movie in which you could see my process. On the walls you could follow my research and see the sound recordings made with a selfmade phonograph.
